Jimmy Fallon by Julie Seabaugh
by brian | No comments

It's Go Time for the former Saturday Night Live golden boy and future heir to Conan O'Brien's Late Night throne. It'll be important for him to actually be, you know, funny come 2009's NBC gig--and the odd MTV award-show hosting stint, film credits such as Taxi and Fever Pitch and 2002's abysmal The Bathroom Wall album aren't going to cut it in terms of prep work. To his credit, Fallon knows it. So, he's been busy honing his chops at Caroline's Comedy Club in New York City, headlining one of the blowout gala shows at July's Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and hitting the road like the untested talent he essentially is. Expect plenty of goofy charm, topical insights and possibly a little guitar work thrown in for good measure. Just don't expect--or allow--him to half-ass it for a single minute. Thu., Aug. 28, 7:30 p.m.; Fri., Aug. 29, 7:30 & 9:45 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 30, 7, 9 & 11:15 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 31, 7:30 p.m., 2008

Gavin Purcell Joins Jimmy Fallon on Late Night
by brian | No comments
22-Aug-2008Written by: Dean Stattmann The Attack of the Show exec producer is the latest addition to Fallon’s Late Night. Gavin Purcell, the former Attack of the Show executive producer, has signed onto Late Night, where he will work as co-producer. According to Variety, the producer will report to Late Night showrunner-producer Mike Shoemaker and executive producer Lorne Michaels. Shoemaker is also a new addition to the Late Night team, however, he and Fallon have been working together since the new host was announced. The producer’s affiliation with the show was made official earlier this month. Fallon, a regular viewer of G4’s Attack of the Show, had long suggested Purcell’s potential Late Night involvement, reported Variety. Meanwhile, the new host is preparing for the launch of his daily Internet series, which will resemble mini Late Night episodes, in an effort to familiarize himself with the new position. Purcell will be instrumental in the appearance of the nightly Webcasts and is confident that Fallon will be successful in this experimental venture. "He's got a good finger on things right now, the Internet and new-media stuff, and he sees that as part of his vision for the show," Purcell said. "For young people today, especially guys, I think the Internet is everything -- it's the cauldron from which all of our information comes now -- and he clicked in on that same idea." Back at Attack of the Show, Purcell will be replaced by supervising producers Joshua Brentano and Vinnie Rutherford, who will together assume the executive producer position.

Versatile Ferguson

As late-night yakkers shuffle chairs, Scotsman's talent shines throughBy Joanne Ostrow Craig Ferguson has an impressive arsenal of talents: He's an actor, director, screenwriter and novelist, not to mention hilarious. (CBS )The future of late-night television is in flux. The year 2010 marks the end of contracts for most of the major players. Amazingly, NBC is sticking to its decision to let Jay Leno's contract expire then. Will Leno jump to another network, perhaps ABC, when Conan O'Brien takes over the long-promised "Tonight" chair in June 2009 and Jimmy Fallon moves up to the Conan "Late Night" slot? More: here.

Jimmy Fallon spotted on the set of Drew Barrymore's directorial debut film.

This wouldn't be a "tale of the extra" without some celebrity namedropping, so let's just get that out of the way. Drew Barrymore is super cute and seems like a really nice boss. Ellen Page was quiet and seemed very focused. Her training on the track has paid off -- she's a pretty good skater! Zoe Bell is quite pretty in person, very animated and of course, an amazing skater. Eve smiled a lot and was a good sport about a goofy scene she had to film with crowd extras. Jimmy Fallon interacted a lot with the extras, talking to us during breaks in shooting and walking around with a miniature fan he aimed at people's faces (did I mention the set was not air-conditioned?). Juliette Lewis wasn't on-set the day I filmed. Read the complete article by Tricia Woolfenden @ The Grand Rapids Press: here.

The state of the late-night TV is about to change
by brian | No comments
Later this month David Letterman will begin his 16th year on CBS Ã¢â‚¬â€ť and the last in his long-running rivalry with Jay Leno on NBC. For most of a decade, little has changed on the late-night TV landscape. Leno has ruled the roost ever since the mid-1990s. Letterman has battled shingles, heart problems and the turmoil of 9/11 in recent years, but that fight for ratings supremacy ended long ago. Even ABC, which fired Bill Maher in 2001 and said so long to Ted Koppel three years ago, has been a bedrock of late thanks to the steady success of Jimmy Kimmel and a rebooted “Nightline.Ã¢â‚¬Âť More @ Kansas City.com: here.

'NIGHT' CREW

Jimmy Fallon (above) replaces Conan O'Brien as "Late Night" host next spring.

THE producer picked to run Jimmy Fallon's new late-night show has until some time this fall to get Fallon ready for his debut on nbc.com.

The Fallon "Webisodes" - seen as a way to road-test ideas and prepare the host for his debut next spring as Conan O'Brien's replacement on NBC's "Late Night" - will likely be no longer than five minutes, said the producer, Michael Shoe maker.

Shoemaker, 49, is a 22-year veteran of "Saturday Night Live," where he developed a close working relationship with Fallon. Shoemaker's appointment to run the new "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" was announced yesterday by "Late Night" and "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels.

"On the Web, the attention span is five minutes, so I think the [Web] shows [will be] like that," Shoemaker told The Post yesterday.

Gearing up for the Webisodes is only one of many tasks for Shoemaker.

"There's so much to do now," he said. "I think it's mostly staffing, and then we'll get together and talk about what the web shows are going to be. Like 'SNL,' you learn something from each show. And like 'SNL,' I think that things you decide a few months ahead you wind up not doing."

Besides hiring writers and producers, Shoemaker will be assembling a band for Fallon's show to replace the Max Weinberg Seven, who are headed to the West Coast with O'Brien when he takes over "The Tonight Show." The producer said he doubted Fallon would have a sidekick.

Jay Leno is scheduled to host his last "Tonight Show" on Friday, May 29, 2009. O'Brien is scheduled to host his first "Tonight Show" the following Monday, June 1. O'Brien is expected to leave "Late Night," and New York, several months before he makes his debut on "Tonight," allowing Fallon to begin hosting "Late Night" in March or April of next year.

Shoemaker believes Fallon is a natural-born talk-show host.

"If you're in a room with him, in five seconds you'd say, 'Oh my God, this guy should have a talk show'. What I have to do is just make sure all of that gets out there, that it's as clear to people watching television as it is to people who meet him that he was built to host a talk show," Shoemaker said.

He said he is unconcerned that there is already a host named "Jimmy" - ABC's Jimmy Kimmel - who is well-established in late-night.

He reacted politely to a reporter's suggestion that Fallon change his name to "J.T." - initials derived from his name, James Thomas Fallon.

"I like it," Shoemaker said. "I'll see if I can talk him into it."

Veteran Saturday Night Live producer Michael Shoemaker will be the producer/showrunner of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon when Fallon succeeds Conan O’Brien as host of the NBC late-night show early next year.

The appointment was announced Wednesday by SNL and Late Night executive producer Lorne Michaels.

"Mike was at the center of all things good at Saturday Night Live for the past 20 years," Michaels said in a statement. "He’ll do a great job with Jimmy."

"I feel lucky to have Mike on my team," Fallon said. “I've always admired his work ethic and his great relationship with writers and the whole creative process. Not to mention he's also brilliantly funny."

Rick Ludwin, executive vice president for late-night and primetime series, added, "Mike is the perfect producer for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. His long experience at Saturday Night Live, his ability to nurture talent, great working relationship with Jimmy and familiarity with the best comedy talent in the business are all invaluable."

NBC has yet to announce dates for O’Brien’s departure and Fallon’s arrival, set for sometime in the first quarter. However, Shoemaker will soon start work with Fallon on a series of preview sketches and bits set to go online this fall.

'SNL' vet joins Fallon's 'Late Night'

Producer Mike Shoemaker will lead show's next iteration By James Hibberd Aug 6, 2008, 11:00 PM ET When Jimmy Fallon takes over "Late Night," a familiar face will run the show. Emmy-winning "Saturday Night Live" producer Mike Shoemaker has been tapped to lead Fallon's edition of the late-night talk show. Shoemaker has been with "SNL" since 1986 and worked with Fallon during the comedian's eight-year tenure on the show. "Mike is the perfect producer for 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,' " said Rick Ludwin, executive vp late-night and primetime series at NBC Entertainment. "His long experience at 'Saturday Night Live,' his ability to nurture talent, great working relationship with Jimmy and familiarity with the best comedy talent in the business are all invaluable." Said Fallon: "I feel lucky to have Mike on my team. I've always admired his work ethic and his great relationship with writers and the whole creative process." Shoemaker will transition from his duties on "SNL" to working with Fallon in the fall. First up is Fallon's online series, which Shoemaker said will upload at 12:30 a.m. each night to help habituate viewers to watching Fallon's show late at night. Each episode likely will run about four to five minutes. Although a brief monologue and trying out a comedy bit is a likely format for the online version, Shoemaker noted that the benefit of a Web series is that there are no firm rules, so the team can try just about anything for the show. From there, Shoemaker and Fallon will try to find running bits to incorporate into the broadcast version, which is expected to launch early next year. Shoemaker said it's still too early to give any details about a format for "Late Night." "There will be furniture," he said. The development of Fallon's show has been relatively under the media radar because of the dramatic fireworks over NBC's 11:30 "Tonight Show" slot, where longtime host Jay Leno is exiting to make room for the ascension of current "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien. "Under the radar is a great place to be," Shoemaker said. "12:30 is perfect; 11:30 is scary. We've very happy to be just on the edge of all the excitement."
